When the hydronephrosis is found during pregnancy, it is called prenatal hydronephrosis. Prenatal hydronephrosis is relatively common, affecting about 1 in 100 babies. In fact, it is the most common problem found on a prenatal ultrasound. Hydronephrosis can affect just one kidney (called unilateral) or both kidneys (called bilateral). The ureterovesical junction is located where the ureter (tube that drains urine from the kidney to the bladder) meets the bladder. Ureterovesical junction (UVJ) obstruction means that there is blockage in this area. Therefore, urine backs up into the ureters and into the kidneys - known as hydronephrosis - and causes swelling and associated Ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction is a condition where the part of the kidney that normally drains urine becomes blocked. This blockage prevents the normal flow of urine out of the kidney and into the bladder, which can lead to kidney damage and swelling (called hydronephrosis ). UPJ obstruction is usually congenital, meaning it stems UVJ stones are small, hard mineral deposits that form in the ureterovesical junction. These stones consist of substances like calcium, oxalate, phosphate, or uric acid. When these materials crystallize and aggregate, they form stones that can range in size from tiny specks to larger masses, causing significant discomfort. However, stones that block your ureters or any of your kidneys' drainage tubes may cause symptoms that include: Severe pain that comes and goes (intermittent) in your upper flank (in your back, under your lower ribs). Pain that spreads (radiates) to your lower abdomen. Pain or a burning feeling while peeing. Nausea. 6.)
