Known as Corone by the Venetians and Ottomans, the town of Koroni (pop. 1,193 in 2021) sits on the southwest peninsula of the Peloponnese on the Gulf of Messinia in Koroni is a beautiful seaside beach resort town in the south western Peloponnese, Greece.Located about 1 hour from Kalamata, and 3.5 hours from Athens, is is Like Methoni, the Koroni citadel has a long and complicated history of invasion and occupation by the Turks, Venetians and the Holy Roman empire. It's a fascinating place to find in such a small, unassuming town, and it makes this place rather special. Visiting the citadel was the first thing we did on our visit to Koroni in the Peloponnese, and it is well worth the uphill hike. Koroni is a picturesque village, built on a hill right above the Messinian gulf. It has an imposing Venetian castle (partly ruined of course), a harbor well sheltered from all but Northerlies which is home to a number of fishing boats.
