Lost London - The Lion Tower, Tower of London. June 8, 2012. Built as a barbican by King Edward I around 1275, the Lion Tower took its name from the fact that it was later used to house the Royal Menagerie. Visitors to the Tower in the late 13th century would have crossed a causeway and drawbridge over the moat to reach the semi-circular Lion The Tower was first used as a prison and execution ground by Henry VII, the first Tudor king. Anyone who was a threat to the throne (small or large, real or imagined) was beheaded. In the reign of Henry VII's infamous son, Henry VIII, the Tower became notorious as a prison for those who fell out of Henry's favor. The Tower was a royal residence until the 17th century, and from the 13th century to 1834 it housed the Royal Menagerie (the Lion Tower). In the Middle Ages the Tower of London became a prison and place of execution for politically related crimes, with most captives being put to death (murdered or executed) on Tower Green or, outside the castle, in public on Tower Hill. There were statues of wild animals, for there were lions of the menagerie, the latter belonging to the system of defense, with their roars which, it seems, chilled the blood.
