Early on she worked at the Cotton Club in shows and sang with Anson Weeks, Curtis Mosby, Paul Howard's Quality Serenaders, and Earl Hines (1930). Ivie Anderson was an American jazz singer and member of Duke Ellington's orchestra. She was born in 1902 in Gilroy, California, and died in 1949. Anderson was one of the first African-American women to make a name for herself as a jazz singer. She toured extensively with Duke Ellington and recorded over a hundred songs with his orchestra. Ivie Marie Anderson was born July 10, 1904, most likely in Bossier Parish, Louisiana, though she grew up in Gilroy, California. Ivie studied at St.Mary's convent school in Gilroy until age thirteen. She spent two years in Washington D.C. at the National Training School for Women and Girls, where she seems to have had some instruction in singing and participated in the school's glee club Like Mildred Bailey, Ivie Anderson was an early female vocalist who pioneered the jazz idiom in dance bands. She joined Duke Ellington's orchestra in 1931and for the next 12 years she toured and recorded with the band.
