Martinu's The Epic of Gilgamesh deserves to be better known: it's a masterpiece of his last years (composed in 1955), and anyone familiar with the exotic, haunted sound world of his Sixth Symphony will find more of the same here. Outstanding moments are many and varied: the taming of Enkidu by a courtesan, the battle between Gilgamesh and The Symphony No. 6 ("Fantaisies symphoniques"), H. 343, by Bohuslav Martinů was begun in New York City in 1951, after a hiatus of four years since its predecessor, and was tentatively completed three years later on 23 April 1953. In Paris, in the months following its completion, Martinů undertook some revisions to the score. It is dedicated to Charles Munch, on the occasion of the 75th An unearthly, high pitched "O!" wails from time to time (Lucy Crowe), her cry linking the disparate segments. Tension builds.
