The Valley Metro Rail system locally referred to as the light rail or called the "Metro," provides more than 25 miles of public transportation for central and downtown Phoenix, the downtown and Arizona State University areas of Tempe, and downtown Mesa in Arizona. It has been in operation since 2008 and has an average daily ridership of 50,000 people per day. The 20-mile, L-shaped Phoenix Valley Metro light rail line serves about 33,000 passengers per day. Commuters use the service to get to U.S. Airways Center, which is home to the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury basketball teams, Chase Field, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, among other places. The opening of the 1.6-mile extension expands the Valley Metro Rail system to 30 miles, while opening new connections to the West Valley.
