About Us. The Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad Historical Society was founded in 2009 by a group of people who were interested in preserving and sharing the rich history of the railroad. The days of mines and mills are long gone, but the old rail lines are still at the heart of the community thanks to the Lackawanna River Heritage Trail.This multi-purpose trail stretches more then 30 miles beginning in Pittston, meanders through the Scranton suburbs stronger and better Lackawanna is working - and as a community, we want to continue going forward, not backward.
