In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Maryport like this: Maryport, market town and seaport, Cross Canonby and Dearham pars., Cumberland, at mouth of river Ellen, 5¼ miles NE. of Workington, 28 SW. of Carlisle, and 313 NW. of London by rail, 2827 ac., pop Maryport is a town in Cumberland, standing on the coast at the uttermost of the Solway Firth.It is one of the string of West Cumberland towns along A596 road, with Workington to the south. It is also on the coastal railway line. Maryport lies at the northern end of the former Cumberland Coalfield, which has been the main aspect of its growth in days gone by, though its origin is much older. Originally part of Cumberland, Maryport became subject to local government changes and in the 1970's became part of Cumbria. Maryport can certainly be classed as a White Town, the most recent population data shows that the population is over 98% White, mostly White British, the ethnic minority makeup of the town is miniscule. Its history dates back 2000 years to around 122AD with the arrival of the Romans, with the first recorded occupant being a Roman officer called Marcus Maenius Agrippa.
