For two thousand years the submissive figure of Mary, the mother of Jesus, has influenced the church's attitude toward women. Balasuriya a specially drafted Profession of Faith with the full approval of Pope John Paul II. Fr. Balasuriya refused to sign for the following reasons. 1.
