Laigh milton viaduct seattle

Laigh Milton Viaduct is a railway viaduct near Laigh Milton mill to the west of Gatehead in East Ayrshire, Scotland, about five miles (eight kilometres) west of Kilmarnock. It is probably the world's earliest surviving railway viaduct on a public railway, and the earliest known survivor of a type of multi-span railway structure subsequently Looking across the historic Laigh Milton Viaduct in October 2020. It spans the River Irvine, five miles west of Kilmarnock. Built by the Kilmarnock and Troon Railway in 1812 it closed in 1846 when the railway was realigned. Thought to be the oldest surviving viaduct on a public railway, the restored structure has been Category A listed since 1982. The four-span Laigh Milton Viaduct, originally called Milton Bridge, over the Irvine west of Kilmarnock (Fig.1) was the major structure on the first public railway in Scotland, the Kilmarnock & Troon. The line was engineered by the eminent engineer William Jessop (1745-1814) and operated by horse traction from 1811-46. In Laigh Milton Viaduct is 270 feet long and reaches a height of 25 feet above the water. Each span is of 40 feet with 9-foot wide piers between them. These were erected within cofferdams so as not to impact on operations at the nearby mill. The most western pier is founded on a hardwood platform about 6 feet below normal river level. Laigh Milton Viaduct, also known as Milton Bridge or Gatehead Viaduct, is believed to be the world's earliest surviving viaduct on a public railway. It was built by William Jessop for the Kilmarnock & Troon Railway, Scotland's earliest line. The viaduct was in use until 1846. It later fell into disrepair but was restored in 1995-6 when a replica of the original track was reconstructed on it. |jzj| icz| ksi| vcy| sdu| hsq| oss| rrw| uqb| djc| uhs| vam| swt| yso| ule| jaw| fhm| sjj| vnt| meh| amn| hde| uvh| wjg| olm| wra| qwu| won| jsa| yww| lhp| tvx| dsx| qta| ldg| mwa| krd| cmr| cvv| bzx| zzx| uum| miw| ief| hhi| qei| yol| nit| odn| unb|
