The melodrama of Snowdonia National Park and the glory of the coastline makes cycling in North Wales a fantastic adventure. With traffic-free trails, gravel routes, family-friendly loops and epic mountain climbs, the landscape is what makes this region so magnificent. If you're after easy rides, Anglesey and the mainland coastline have plenty of options that won't tax the legs. The Vale of Wales Coast Path cycling routes. With a path stretching the length of its entire coastline, Wales has a lot to offer families who like to be beside the seaside on their bikes. Kirstie Pelling travelled from the south to the north with her family in summer 2021. Here's a selection of her favourite day rides, on or connecting to the Wales Coast Path. The Lon Las Ogwen is the first section of the National Cycle Network's route 82 that runs from Bangor in North Wales and enters the Snowdonia National Park at Bethesda. It mainly follows the route of the old railway line that brought slate down the valley from the Bethesda slate quarry to the coast, where it was shipped around the world. The route is well signposted with blue National Cycle Talacre to Penmaenmawr. There is 34 miles of cycle path along the North Wales coast between Talacre and Penmaenmawr. It is mostly hard surfaced and nearly continuously off-road, apart from a 2-3 mile gap at Llandudno, a 260 yard gap on a main road at Rhos on Sea and a handful of very short linking sections on quiet roads. This route begins in the northern town of Bala. It takes you along the north-eastern edge of Lynn Tegid, or Bala Lake, before winding the quiet country roads and upwards towards the distant hills.
