The painting of La Loge or the Theatre Box shows an elegantly dressed couple attending a performance at the theatre. This masterpiece, painted when Renoir was thirty-three and shown in the first Impressionist exhibition of 1874, can be regarded simply as a glimpse of contemporary life but is in a sense portraiture also. P ierre-Auguste Renoir was a French painter who was among those who started the Impressionist movement in the late 1860s. He was born in Limoges, France in 1844 and became an apprentice to a porcelain painter at 13 years old (Distel, Grove). Edmond Renoir was a journalist and art critic and it's hard to tell anything interesting about him (other than that he looks quite handsome in this painting). Yet there is more to tell about his companion: Nini Lopez was a frequent model for Renoir's Pierre-Auguste Renoir's La Loge (The Theatre Box), 1874, is a masterpiece of Impressionist painting and one of the most famous works in the Courtauld Gallery's collection. The exhibition unites this exceptional picture with Renoir's other paintings of elegant Parisians on display in their loges.
