Anuradha Roy, in a dozen years and with four award-winning novels in that time to her credit - An Atlas of Impossible Longing, The Folded Earth, Sleeping on Anuradha Roy was born in 1967 ( age 56 in 2023) in Kolkata and grew up mainly in Hyderabad, India. She studied Literature at Presidency College, Kolkata and at New Hall (now Murray Edwards College), Cambridge University, UK. She returned to take care of her mother for a while and moved north to Delhi and got a job with Oxford University Press. The sense of a meaningful shared space and a common language, the possibility of a broad literary flourishing—many of those fragile shoots of the nineties have been trampled into the ground by the ferocious invaders of private as well as public spheres. ANURADHA ROY: Sleeping on Jupiter started as a long short story with three old friends going on a part-pilgrimage, part holiday.I was interested at that time in friendship "and the intensive togetherness of holidays can really test friendships. In that story, the women glimpse a girl on the beach whom they are judgemental about, without knowing her. With the Indian elections due to take place later this year, however, Roy remains optimistic that things can change in her country. "Anything could happen," she says. "Everyone is very fearful of the coming elections because you feel as if there may be a lot of violence.
