The Ara Pacis Augustae or Altar of the Augustan Peace in Rome was built to celebrate the return of Augustus in 13 BCE from his campaigns in Spain and Gaul. The marble structure, which once stood on the Campus Martius, is a masterpiece of Roman sculpture and, in particular, of portraiture. The subjugation of the Western provinces was celebrated by the dedication of an altar to Augustan Peace (the ara Pacis Augustae) at Rome. This chapter examines in detail the dedication of that highly complex, senatorial monument at Rome. His son, Titus, was called in Spain 'conservator Pacis Augustae', CIL 2, 3732 = ILS 259, and another dedication to Pax Augusta in Spain, CIL 2, 1061, may be Flavian as well (on Augustan evidence in Spain, see p. 49, n. 64).
