CBGB, the legendary New York punk club, initially booked "country, bluegrass, and blues." Television convinced the owner, Hilly Kristal, to book other styles of music and though he resisted MARQUEE MOON. Television. 70s. Rock. Album of the Day. Television. Wednesday, December 13, 2023. Television helped turn CBGB into a punk mecca, but when it came time to cut their debut album, the quartet were anything but fast and furious. Frontman Tom Verlaine (born on this day in 1949) meticulously mapped out the record, and when the band Television's music, especially their landmark album "Marquee Moon," showcased the depth and breadth of the musical experimentation that CBGB encouraged. CBGB was more than just a music venue; it was a cultural incubator that nurtured some of the most innovative artists of the late 20th century. CBGB was the East Village club that would become the launching pad for The Ramones, Blondie, and the Talking Heads. Led by singer/guitarist Tom Verlaine - his adopted surname a nod to the French symbolist STEVE INSKEEP, HOST: Fifty years ago this week, a club in the Bowery section of Manhattan opened its doors, and even then, I bet the bathrooms were repulsive.
