Bidwell's Bar (also known as Bidwell Bar, and Bidwells Bar) was a gold mining camp in Butte County, California, United States, which lay at the end of the California Trail. It was located 6.5 miles (10.5 km) east-northeast of Oroville, at an elevation of 902 feet (275 m). The Court of Sessions licensed the original Bidwell Bar Toll Bridge in May 1851. That bridge was destroyed in April 1852. In December 1854 a license was granted to the Bidwell Bridge Company to build a toll suspension bridge. The bridge was built by Jones and Murray, contractors in Sacramento. The total cost of the structure was $34,922. "In 1998, as a volunteer for the Bidwell Bar Association at Lake Oroville Visitor Center," Chuck Smay writes, "I set up a three-ring binder titled The History of Bidwell's Bar In One Place Historic Bidwell Mansion stands today as a memorial to the Bidwells and celebrates, through their memory, those qualities of human mind and spirit of Enlightenment, Generosity and Concern for the well-being of humanity, that gave beauty, meaning and purpose for their lives.
