NOC, home to RRS James Cook and RRS Discovery, is managing 31 global research missions in 2023, providing a wealth of support for international research institutions.. This will include missions to the Bay of Biscay where NOC's Marine Autonomous Robotic Systems team will be trialing its fleet of AUV's and gliders to test autonomous ocean research capabilities, an expedition to quantify Royal Research Ship (RRS) James Cook was delivered to NERC on 31 August 2006 having been built by the Norwegian shipbuilder, Flekkefjord & Maskinfabrikk AS to a design by Skipsteknisk AS. The ship is named after Captain James Cook FRS RN (1728-1779) who led three of the most significant voyages of exploration ever undertaken between 1768-79. The 2007-built RRS James Cook ship is an ice-strengthened research vessel serving as oceanographic survey ship homeported in Tilbury-London (England UK). Its sistership (with a similar design) is RRS Discovery (launched in 2013). RRS stands for "Royal Research Ship". Royal research ships are the UK's merchant navy vessels conducting scientific Research Expeditions. At any one time scientists and technicians from the UK marine community can be at sea on numerous vessels.
