In early March of 1979, the University of Chicago announced that Walter Eugene Massey would be Argonne National Laboratory's sixth director. He was the first African-American to hold this post. It was a prime position, but Massey's decision to accept it was not taken lightly considering a recent energy crisis and a growing scientific enterprise hinting at a 21 st century free of fossil Dr. Walter E. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was fatally shot on a hotel balcony in Memphis. Dr. Massey, then a physicist at Argonne National Laboratory, watched the funeral on television, in tears, from his apartment in Chicago. Outside, the west side of the city was The College Arts Access Program and the Walter and Shirley Massey Chicago Scholarship fund were created to bring more Chicago Public Schools graduates to SAIC.
