2.1 Method. We use the Bikel parser (Bikel 2004) with default settings for training and parsing. In Experiment 1, we convert the RRR set into artificial sentences. The data consist of quadruples of the form (v,n1,p,n2): verb, noun, preposition, and embedded noun. To create sentences, we add the generic subject they. As a rough baseline, we compared the bracketing accuracy of our parser to that of a statistical parser (Bikel, 2002), Bikel-M, trained on 4294 TRIPS parse trees from the Monroe corpus (Stent, 2001 Table 2 shows the experimental results on the ProgressNotes Treebank. The Stanford parser achieved the best performance of 70.30% BF, with the default settings. Compared to the default setting, re-training on the clinical Treebank improved the performance for all the three parsers, and the biggest boost was achieved by the Bikel parser (from a F-score of 66.60% to 72.45%). The improvement in PP attachment was larger (20.5% ERR), and also statistically signicant. The results for PP attachment are especially important, as we demonstrate that the sense information has high utility when embedded within a parser, where the parser needs to rst identify the ambiguity and heads correctly. This work extends and adapts the Bikel parser, which uses head-driven lexical statistics, to dialogue and shows that the augmented parser produces significantly fewer constituents than the baseline system and achieves comparable bracketing accuracy.
