This is the most iconic place to visit, one of the landmarks of Bulgaria. The Troyan Monastery (Троянски манастир) is the third largest Christian Orthodox monastery in the country. It is established at the end of the 16th century, during the Ottoman era in Bulgaria. Since then, it grew and although it was partially destroyed by Troyan Ceramic Process. The pottery style practiced today began in the 19th century based on Slavic and Thracian patterns. The terra cotta clay from the region has a distinct red color that turns Bulgarian pottery into a deep reddish brown once fired. The style is said to be different based on the different women (or men) who make it by hand Troyan is not a very large city located in the center of Bulgaria, 160 km to the east of Sofia. The city is named after the Roman road Via Trayana, which crosses it, connecting Philippopolis with Eskus and Nove on the Danube (today they are Plovdiv, the town of Gigen and the ancient Roman village of Nove, 4 km from the city from Svishtov). Troyan is a town remembering the name of Roman Emperor Trajan, in Lovech Province in central Bulgaria. It is the administrative centre of the homonymous Troyan Municipality. The town is about 162 kilometres away from the country capital Sofia. The river of Beli Osam passes through the heart of the town. The 2021 Census indicates that the population of the Trojan was 18,449 inhabitants.
