In 1650, plantation slaves revolt and head for the mountains where they find others led by the aged seer, Acotirene. She anoints one who becomes Ganga Zumba, a legendary king. Quilombo, a movie about a seventeenth-century maroon slave community in Northeastern Brazil called Quilombo dos Palmares. In this paper, I look at criticism about the movie and how the myth of "racial democracy" is still alive in Quilombo despite the film's theme of Black resistance to White oppression during slavery. I argueQuilombo dos Palmares was a real-life democratic society, created in Brazil in the 17th century. This incredibly elaborate (and surprisingly little-known) film traces the origins of Quilombo, which began as a community of freed slaves. The colony becomes a safe harbor for other outcasts of the world, including Indians and Jews.
