James Ralston Scobie was born in Valparaiso, Chile, in 1929. He graduated from Princeton University in 1950, and fulfilled both his Master's (1951) and Ph.D. of history at James Scobie. James Scobie was one of Australia's pre-eminent racehorse trainers. He originally combined his training with riding over the jumps and won many feature races including the 1887 Grand National Steeple. Scobie was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001.
